Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust is often noted as the first wide release by a Black female filmmaker, but when it did come out in 1991, it only made it to so many theaters. In 2016, Cohen Media Group gave it a proper restoration and re-release, theatrically and then on Blu-ray. These assets take direction from that re-release, rather than the original marketing materials, with the use of Lithos Pro.
Dash shot much of Daughters of the Dust in wide shots, taking in the landscapes and the beaches of the island setting, which makes the film especially suited to video content with quotes and calls to action.
